Creating a Video Surveillance System Based on SmartVision

SmartVision is a comprehensive software solution for modern video surveillance systems, offering advanced features to enhance security and monitoring efficiency. Supporting unstable streams and budget-friendly cameras, it implements load balancing for optimal performance. Compatible with any IP cameras that support RTSP or HTTP broadcasting, SmartVision enables efficient image viewing and processing.

Video Surveillance SmartVision

After installing and launching the program, the main window will appear, displaying images from the surveillance cameras. At the top, you will find the main menu, which duplicates the buttons on the toolbar below.
You can hide the button panel and use the program’s main menu instead.

On the right, select the desired tile layout for displaying images from the surveillance cameras.
Options include layouts with 1, 4, 8, 9, or 16 tiles.
The selected layout will be saved when you exit the program.

Initially, the tiles in the main window will be empty. To connect your IP cameras, click on the camera icon on the main toolbar. A form with a list of IP cameras will appear.
Cameras can be added either automatically or manually. The first icon on the camera list panel is used for automatically searching for IP cameras in the local network.

Automatic Camera Search via ONVIF

To automate the detection and addition of IP cameras, follow these steps:

Adding IP Cameras Manually

To add cameras manually, use the “Add Camera” button. A form for adding a new camera will appear.
All you need to do is enter the correct RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) or HTTP stream URL.
Typically, an RTSP URL looks like this:
rtsp://admin:password@ipaddress:port/text

After entering and saving the correct RTSP URL, the main window will display an image from the IP camera. Note that default passwords vary by manufacturer. A list of default passwords can be found in the documentation.

The camera settings form provides a wide range of options and features. Some of these options require significant computational resources. Therefore, for a large number of cameras, you need to select appropriate hardware that supports advanced capabilities for real-time detection and recognition of objects.

General Software Settings

Cloud Records (Cloud Storage for Files)
On the first page of the settings, you can enter your login and password for the cloud service. To do this, you need to create an account on the website and confirm it via email. Enter:

Click Save. If the option “Connect and enable cloud recording” is enabled, you can upload events to the server for secure storage and remote viewing. Additionally, you can access your cameras through the cloud service in your personal account. To enable this feature, you will need to configure the appropriate settings in the camera options. For more details, refer to the section on IP Camera configuration.

Local Records (Local Storage for Files)

In the general settings, you can select a directory for the “videos” archive where video files will be saved during recording.

By default, the “videos” folder is created in the same directory where the SmartVision program is installed.

This folder contains three subdirectories:

Inside each subdirectory, files are saved in folders named by the current date. The entire video archive is immediately saved in a compressed MP4 format, requiring no further transcoding. This means you can simply copy any video file and open it in any media player that supports MP4, which includes virtually all players.

Video Retention Settings
In the general settings, you can also define the maximum retention period for video recordings in days. After this period, files will be automatically deleted.

IP Camera Configuration

The IP camera settings are divided into several sections:

Device – General IP Camera Settings

This section allows you to input the camera’s name and the RTSP or HTTP stream address.
“Display the video stream on the main form”: Specifies whether the camera’s video stream should be displayed on the main interface.
For example, on one computer, you can record video without viewing it, while on another, you can only view the video without saving it to the hard drive. If you use a low-performance computer for viewing only, it is recommended to use a secondary stream with a lower resolution.
Advanced Options:
Here, you can configure automatic reconnection to the camera after a set number of seconds.

Recording – IP Camera Recording

This section allows you to configure continuous recording settings for creating a video archive.

Advanced Options:
.

For time-lapse recording, you can set the number of frames per minute. The default is 2 frames per second. Time-lapse recording significantly reduces disk space usage. The fewer frames per minute you record, the less disk space is required.
Parallel Recording of Events: Continuous or time-lapse recording does not restrict you from recording events simultaneously. For instance, when motion is detected, you can have a high-quality video recording with a high FPS while also capturing a low-motion time-lapse recording.
To save disk space, all streams are automatically transcoded and saved in compressed MP4 format. This recording process requires a certain level of CPU/GPU load, unlike saving to an AVI file.

Detection – Motion Detection

If you need video surveillance in areas with minimal movement, it makes sense to use motion detection. For example, this could include an elevator lobby, an office during off-hours, or a home or apartment in your absence. In such cases, continuous recording of an empty space is unnecessary. However, if you have installed surveillance in a shopping mall or on a busy street, continuous recording is recommended to reduce CPU load. It’s important to understand that both detection and recording place a certain load on the processor and hard drive. For systems with a large number of cameras, it is essential to pre-calculate the computer and network configuration to ensure sufficient resources for your requirements.

Sensitivity Settings
The sensitivity of the motion detector is configured in Advanced Options.
Sensitivity can range from 0 to 1:

You can also define specific areas for motion detection within this configuration.

Motion-Triggered Recording
When the motion detector is triggered, recording will begin for a specified duration. By default, this is set to 15 seconds, but you can adjust this parameter in Advanced Options. All recorded events can be reviewed in the Events section.

Detection – Object Detection

If you have enabled motion detection on the previous tab, you can also use object detection powered by computer vision.
On this tab, select the option “Use object detection”.
Object detection is triggered when motion is detected. By default, the interval for object detection is set to 300 milliseconds (Advanced Options).
This means that frames for object detection will be processed every 300 milliseconds.

Object detection places a load on the CPU, so it is not recommended to set this interval below 150 milliseconds. The shorter the interval, the higher the processor load. This feature is only supported on 64-bit computers.

Enable Face Recognition
Enable this option to use face recognition.
Face recognition can be used independently of object detection.
This feature requires a computer with sufficient computational power and is only supported on 64-bit systems.

Enable License Plate Recognition
Enable this option to automatically detect vehicle license plates.
License plate recognition can be used together with or separately from object detection.
This feature also requires a computer with sufficient computational power and is only supported on 64-bit systems.

Enable Smoke and Fire Detection
Enable this option for automatic detection of smoke and fire in the frame.
It is recommended to use smoke and fire detection separately from other options.
This feature requires a computer with sufficient computational power and is only supported on 64-bit systems.Shorten with AI

Cloud Storage and Online Camera Viewing via the Internet

SmartVision allows you to view your cameras with an RTSP stream online without a dedicated IP address and without port forwarding.
To do this, you need to enable 3 options:
In the general settings, enter your email and password at cloud service, and in the camera settings, select the option “Stream camera online to cloud server.”
To record events to the cloud server, enable the option “Upload Events to Cloud Server.”
It is also recommended to enable “Upload events to the server only in case of object detection” to reduce false triggers.

You can then use the mobile app or the mobile version of the website for online camera and event viewing.

Advanced – Additional Object Detection Settings

This tab configures probabilities for identifying specific types of objects and the number of object detections with a given probability.

Object detection in the frame occurs based on these parameters.

Here you set the detection probabilities and the number of repetitions in the frame for the following objects/subjects:
person, car, bus, bicycle, cat, dog, bird.

It is recommended not to change these settings.

List of Surveillance Cameras

The second button on the main form calls up the list of cameras connected to the SmartVision CCTV software.

The camera list form also contains a toolbar with buttons.

The buttons allow you to move cameras up and down, thus changing their position on the main program form.

You can also edit or delete unnecessary cameras.

Surveillance Events

The first button on the main form is Events.

Here you will see all motion detector activations, as well as object detection of faces and car license plates, smoke and fire detector triggers.

You can also apply filters and find the events you need through the search form (the very first button on the form).

The events form also shows the status of file uploads to the cloud server if video transmission to the server is set up for the selected camera.

On this form, you can also view the video of the recorded event. All uploads to the server are done securely with encryption.

Face Recognition Database

You can use photographs to train the neural network and create a face database for online recognition.

Manual training for a single face takes about 30 seconds.

The system also allows you to automatically create a face database based on video streams from surveillance cameras.
To do this, the system needs to receive 5 images of the same face.

Adding new faces for recognition to the database

To add a new face to the database, enter the person’s name and click Add.

Then select at least 5 photographs and save the result for processing. Click Save & Update.

Wait for the system’s training process to complete.

The database does not store the actual photographs but their “digital weights” necessary for recognition by the neural network.

When face recognition is enabled, new faces will automatically be added to the database during the processing of video streams from IP cameras.

How many cameras can the system handle?

Currently, the program has a limit of 16 cameras. However, you can install the program on multiple computers for different cameras and connect them all to a single account in our cloud service.

For online camera viewing, a powerful computer is not required. You can even use an old 32-bit computer. For face recognition, license plate recognition, and object detection, you should select the computer/server’s power based on the number and resolution of your cameras.

It is recommended to use Windows 10 or higher for this purpose. Resource consumption also depends heavily on the model of the IP camera, FPS, and resolution. The CPU load for cameras with approximately the same specifications can vary greatly between different manufacturers. Therefore, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The optimal load can be determined experimentally based on the tasks being solved and the camera parameters.

How to install and use Camera Live on a compatible Windows or Mac PC/laptop

Camera Live is a free program for you Windows PC or Mac that can be used to locate its local IP address and to view the camera’s live feed locally and remotely. 

First download the appropriate installation file from the links below and install the program.

Once you have installed the program, open it and click on Add Video. Then click on Discover to find the cameras UID, or enter it manually ensuring it is correct and all in uppercase. Enter the cameras password ensuring this is correct and in the correct case. Then give the camera a name e.g. garden, drive etc. and click on OK.

Once added wait for the camera to connect to the program. When it is connected you will see a green icon next to the UID, you can then view your camera’s live feed by clicking on the play icon. You will see the “No Video” message until you have viewed the live feed for the first time and the program can produce a thumbnail image from this.

Forgotten your password or getting a wrong password message?

If a password has been forgotten unfortunately there is no way to recover these as this would compromise the camera security.

The default username and password for the camera will be “admin” e.g.:

Username:     admin
Password:      admin

We recommend trying these first to see if they allow you to login. 

These must be entered all in lowercase and should be double checked as some devices such as iPhones/iPads will set the first letter to uppercase automatically.

When changing the password this should be in alphanumeric characters (i.e. a,b,c… 1,2,3…) only with no special characters or spaces.

If the default password has been changed you cannot recall what you set it to you will need to reset the camera to the factory defaults to regain access. 

NB: When you reset a camera it will reset it to factory defaults (and will lose the WiFi details you currently have set) so you should only perform a reset while your camera is connected to your router with an ethernet cable.

To do this can you:

1) Remove all cables connected to the camera.
2) Remove any SD card from the camera.
3) Wait 10 mins.
4) Connect the ethernet cable to the camera and your router, you should hear a click when the cable is connected.
5) Wait 2 mins.
6) Connect the power cable to the camera.
7) Wait 5 mins for the camera to power up.
8) Locate the camera’s reset button or recess.

For the outdoor camera this will be a button on the underneath of the camera or on the end of a cable.
For the indoor camera this will be a recess on the back of the camera that can be pressed with a paperclip or similar.

9) Press and hold for 20 seconds and release.
10) Wait 5 mins for the camera to reset ensuring it remains connected to your router with the ethernet cable throughout.

Then once the camera is reset can you log in to the camera interface using the default username and password which is “admin”

As the camera has been reset it will be at the factory defaults once again, so you will need to setup your camera again with the WiFi details, etc. as if from new.

Incorrect Task Management setup

How can I transfer video clips from an SD card in the camera to my computer?

If you are looking to transfer recordings from an SD card installed in the camera to you computer over WiFi this is limited to one file at a time for practical reasons:

.

1) If your SD card had, for example, 128GB of clips it would not only be very cumbersome to transfer that quantity to your computer over your local WiFi but potentially slow down your local network too. As SD cards have very limited file speeds transferring this magnitude of data may also take a very long time to offload.

.

2) It is also impractical or unwise to transfer en masse as it would also cause a slow down of the camera’s capabilities for the time while the transfer is progressing, and your camera could miss key motion events from being recorded.

.

Solutions? There are a number of options available to you:

.

– You can browse the recordings stored on your camera directly from a web browser and check which recordings are important to keep. You can play back the clips in your browser without needing to download to your computer first. Click here for a guide on how to do this.

– You can set the sd card to auto overwrite so that it automatically deletes the oldest recordings when the card is full, so you don’t have manually delete.

.

– You can use a number of tasks in the camera to automatically offload clips from the sd card (before they get overwritten) to Dropbox, your own FTP server, etc.

.

– If you really must download everything off the SD card the easiest and quickest way is to take the sd card out and insert directly into your computer (if it supports SD media) and then simply drag and drop the files off the card to your computer.

.

Cannot connect to the camera remotely using the app.

Are you having trouble connecting to the camera using the app on your phone? This may be a p2p error. The camera and app use p2p to connect, if the camera is unable to connect to the p2p server then it will not be viewable via the app. Click here to check and resolve this.

Has the camera been set to a static IP? We do not recommend setting the camera to a static IP as this is not usually required and can render the camera inaccessible if setup incorrectly. Click here to check this has been setup correctly.

Is the UID correct and all in uppercase? If any character in the cameras UID is not in uppercase it will not be able to connect to the app remotely. If this is the case, delete the camera from the app and add it again. For help with this click here for an Android device and click here for an iOS device.

Changed WiFi router or given a new router by your ISP?

If for some reason you have changed/updated your WiFi router your camera(s) will need to be reset to factory defaults and setup again, since the WiFi details and ip addressing on your camera(s) will still be that of your old router.

Power LED flashing rapidly and camera offline?

A rapidly flashing green power LED usually indicates that the camera’s firmware has encountered an error. This is rare but can occasionally happen after an unexpected power cut (if the camera is in the middle of performing a task), due to incorrect settings in the camera (too many enabled tasks, conflicting settings etc.), or due to a faulty SD card. 

This can usually be resolved with a reset of the camera. To do this first power down the camera and leave it for at least 10-15 minutes, then follow the steps on the page linked below to reset the camera. Note: a reset will clear all changed settings in the camera and revert it back to the defaults.

If the reset does not clear the error then you should get in touch with our support team using the “contact us” form as they will be able to advise on the next steps to resolve the issue.

If you think you need to reset your camera we recommend you first get in touch with us using the “Contact us” form as a reset may not solve your issue and will wipe the camera of any user data, meaning you will need to set the camera up again.

9) Go to Setting, Tools, Backup or Reset.
10) Click on Reset, then when it appears click on Reboot.
10) Wait 5 mins for the camera to power up fully, ensuring it remains connected to your router with the Ethernet cable throughout.

Then once the camera is reset can you log in to the camera interface using the default username and password which is admin (in lower case) for both.

Camera is rebooting often

Do you find the camera does not remain online for any length of time? If so this is usually a setup or a hardware error, typically with the SD card or the recording setup. Please take a look at the troubleshooting guides below to help resolve your issues.

SD card not working.

Too many tasks enabled.

Issues with power supply, outdoor cameras.

Cannot view the video from the app.

If you are having trouble viewing video in the app it is likely due to one of the issues listed below. 

Poor Wifi connectivity

p2p disabled

Privacy mode enabled blocking access to the live feed.

Live feed or playback is jerky and not smooth

The first thing to check will be that the camera has a strong WiFi connection. This can be checked in the app by going to Edit Camera, Advanced Setting, WiFi Setting and should be at least 50-60%. A poor WiFi signal can cause the playback of the live feed to be poor. Click here for advice if the WiFi signal strength is poor.

If the WiFi connection is strong, the next thing to check will be that the stream setup is set appropriately for your network. The defaults for this are below and can be found by logging in to the camera’s web interface and going to Setting, Camera, Stream Setup.

.

The H.264 bitrate should be left at the default of 1536, raising this can cause the camera to send more data than your router can cope with causing a jerky live stream.

The MJPEG stream should not be set higher than the default of 50. This is an uncompressed stream that is used for the cameras motion detection, not for recording or streaming, raising this can cause issues with the streaming as it puts a high load on the camera.

You should also check that you do not have too many tasks enabled, conflicting tasks can cause issues with the camera’s ability to stream well. You should only have one of task 7, 8, 9 or 10 enabled at any one time. For more information on setting up the task management page click here.

NVR IP address keeps changing.

You have setup and NVR with a camera successfully however it stops recording after a short time.

This may be due to your router assigning the NVR a new IP address very often. In this case the best way to prevent this from changing and your details in the Storage Setup page becoming incorrect is by setting the NVR to a static IP address.

Why add cameras to an NVR?​

Before you start…​

Before anything, to be able to add your IP cameras, you need to make sure that:

How to connect an IP camera to a Hikvision NVR 5

How to add your cameras using the V5 GUI…​

Step 1:​

Open a web browser and enter the IP address of your NVR in the address bar. If you are not sure what this is, use the SADP tool to find it.​

Step 2:​

Log in to the NVR using the “admin” username and password you have set on it.​

Step 3:​

Go to: Device Access > Device Configuration > PoE Settings​

​

If you are connecting your camera via the Plug-and-Play method, then make sure that Network Camera Plug-and-Play is enabled on the POE port you will be connecting the camera to on this page.​

​

For any camera with a cable run under 100m, leave the Network Cable Distance as Short Distance.​

​

If you are connecting your camera manually by IP address, disable the Network Camera Plug-and-Play option for the channel that you plan to add the camera to.​

Step 4:​

Go to: Device Access > Device > Video Device​

​

For any Plug-and-Play camera, just make sure that it is in its inactive default state and then connect it to the port you reserved in step 3. After 20 seconds or so, the camera Status should turn to Connecting and then Online (you may need to click on Refresh to see this).​

For Manually added cameras, if you can see the camera in the List of Online Devices section, then just tick the box for the camera and then click + Add to Device List, which will then automatically add it to one of the channels you disabled Plug-and-Play on in the last step.​

Alternatively…​

Click on +Add at the top of the page and fill out the fields as follows:​

​

IP Address: Enter the IP address of your camera, using the ‘Test’ button to verify there is a camera at that address. ​

Device Name: This can be anything you like, as it is the name the camera will show with on your NVR. ​

Protocol: Select the camera’s manufacturer from this list, or failing that, use the ONVIF protocol (your camera will need to have ONVIF enabled for this to work). ​

Management Port: Enter the Server port set on the camera, which you can find in the SADP tool or in Network>Basic Settings>Port in the camera’s web browser interface. If you haven’t changed this, it is usually 8000 by default. ​

User Name: “admin” or the username of any other users set up on that camera. ​

Password: The password set with that user on the camera – if this is the same as the ‘Default Activation Password‘ you have set on the NVR, then you can tick this box instead. ​

Transfer Protocol: ‘Auto’ is normally best. ​

​

When these are completed, click OK.​

Your camera should then appear in the list of devices with an assigned channel, and an Online status, meaning it has been successfully added.​

Extra tips…​

How do I reset my Hikvision device to factory settings?

In some cases, you’ll need to reset your Hikvision device to its inactive factory state. This could be if you’re passing the system on to somebody else; if you’ve forgotten your password; or simply if something has gone wrong during the configuration, meaning you need to start afresh.

There are a couple of ways of doing this, the method you’ll use depends on whether you have a password to log into the device.

Via the device’s backend in a web browser or iVMS-4200:

If you are able to log into your device’s configuration menu in iVMS-4200 or the web browser interface, then the easiest way to reset it is on the Upgrade & Maintenance page here. The steps below show you how to find this page in both interfaces.

Factory reset by using the device’s pushbutton:

On the majority of Hikvision’s newer camera models, there will be a pushbutton on the camera which will allow to carry out a hard reset without needing to log into it. This is most useful when you have forgotten your password, as it allows you to set a new password on the camera while avoiding much of the faff involved in doing this through the SADP tool.

REAL-TIME FACE RECOGNITION

The Optiview VMS 2018 will continue to be available to download for a limited amount of time, but will no longer be supported going forward.

WHAT IS THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF DEVICES THAT CAN BE PUT ON THE FREE VMX OR THE PAID VMX+?

The free version of the Optiview VMX will suport up to 64 cameras. If the user wants to view more than 64 cameras, they will have to purchase the Base License, and then an additional license for each channel, up to 512. See which software is right for you here!

HOW DO I UPGRADE FROM THE VMS TO THE VMX?

The VMX software is completely different from the Optiview VMS and a user can use both. The VMX Server and Client software can be downloaded here.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE VMX SERVER AND THE VMX CLIENT?

The server runs all the services and acts as a connection point for several clients that will handle the management of configurations, devices and integrations of one or more IP devices supported by the Optiview VMX software.

IF I HAVE THE SERVER DOWNLOADED, HOW DO I DOWNLOAD THE CLIENT?

The client can be downloaded using the link from the server user interface labeled as “Download Client”. I also made a link for the Client software within our technical support page which Georgia can use, to make a download link within the product resource page.

CAN I DESIGNATE THE NUMBER OF CAMERA CHANNELS BEING SEEN BY THE VMX PER DVR OR NVR?

Yes. The number of cameras “actually” in use by a device (for example a 32-ch NVR) can be designated within the VMX so that it can only sees the actual number of channels. For example, If a user is using multiple 32 channel recorders but not all channels, the VMX can be set to not count every single channel and maximize the usage.

CAN I DESIGNATE THE NUMBER OF ACCESS CONTROL DOORS BEING SEEN BY THE VMX?

No. Whatever the maximum number of doors that an access control panel can handle is, that is what the VMX will see. For example, a CAS-4MC (4 door master control panel) is expandable up to 64 doors, so this will max out the VMX. No additional master control panels can be added unless the user upgrades to the paid version of the Optiview VMX.

CAN I SEE THE HUMAN TEMPERATURE DETECTION & NOTIFICATION SOLUTION ON THE VMX?

The human temperature text overlay can be seen at LIVE mode and Playback mode at the VMX.

HOW MANY USERS CAN ACCESS THE VMX AT ONE TIME?

To add your Dahua device using the Amazon Alexa app:

Let’s assume that you’ve installed and configured your Alexa-compatible home security camera already and you have an Alexa-enabled smart speaker.

Now you need to log in to your Alexa app or make an account if you don’t already have one. Simply download the Alexa app and follow the prompts to sign in/register a new account.

The camera often offline

1, Check whether the camera antenna is vertically upward.

2, please confirm the distance between the camera to your router, it better within 30FT, if the distance too far, the camera will offline.

3, If still offline, please give your camera version, we will give you a firmware to upgrade camera, it can enhances the camera’s signal.

Camera can’t connect to wifi

1, please confirm wifi is 2.4G or 5G, the camera only support 2.4G. And wifi password cannot exceed 12 characters.

2, if it is 4G wifi, please place the camera next to the router, then press the reset button for 6 seconds to add device again.

3, or you can connect the camera to your router with network cable, then switch to wirelessly connection.

How to using PTZ function on NVR?

1, please left click your mouse, you will see a smart menu below, click PTZ control.

2, click the arrow direction to move the camera.

Please note, if your camera is digital camera, you can’t zoom in or out in this interface, it only suit for optical zoom camera.

You need to go back to main menu, left click mouse again, click zoom in, then roll you mouse to zoom in.

How to share the device to other one?

a, Please go to the app–click “Share” icon–select permission and effective time.

b, after click complete icon, you will get a QR-code.

If “x” is displayed on sound option, it is not turned on, you need to turn on first.

How to setup motion tracking

If you add camera to NVR, please go to video detection to check whether your nvr support motion tracking.

Usually, NVR not support motion tracking, you need to add camera to the app Eseecloud, then add to NVR, so that you can setup motion tracking on the app.

1, Into device—click setting icon on upper right corner—go to smart detection alarm—enable motion tracking option.

How to set preset position cruise

1, go to setting interface—ptz control—cruise mode—select preset position cruise.

2, go back to record interface–click Preset–add more than two different positions–go to More–click cruise.

After setting successful, the camera will cruise within the preset position range.

Camera not recording after install SD card

1, Please go to setting interface–Storage setting–local storage space–check the status of the SD card.

2, SD card is in normal status, please check if SD card capacity is full, and then format the SD card.

3, If showing no SD card, please take the SD card out and insert it again. (Please keep the power off before inserting the SD card)

1, Please check if you have enable Alexa option on the app, click setting icon, advance settings, Alexa service authorization.

Fixed-point cruise on NVR

1) Right click the mouse–system setup–channel setup–PTZ setup. select correct channel. Add first cruise point,

2) click add to set first position (the default is 1, which does not need to be changed),

3) then click preset box select 2–add, add multiple cruise points in this way. You also can select “keep time” you want, preferably in five seconds or more.

4) And then click “?” question mark into the PTZ control interface–click PTZ control option to set first position, then click store.

5) change the preset box to 2, adjust the camera lens to second position–store

6) right click anywhere –return to the PTZ setting interface–apply—ok.

After connect to mobile phone, camera showing “wrong password” on NVR.

The camera will turn to the wall or the ground

1. Please confirm whether to manually rotate the camera lens. If so, the camera will not return to its original position after restarting or automatic tracking.

please unplug the power adapter, then plug it in again, click PTZ on the mobile app or NVR to control the camera lens.

2. If you do not turn the camera manually, please tell us your camera ID number and version information, and we will feed back to our technical support.

One device is linked to one user only. The NVR system can only be controlled by one authorized account, which can share the device with others to prevent attack or hacking.

There are 2 ways to share the device with others. For the admin user, please follow the instructions to share the device:

1.Type in “Menu Icon ” and navigate to “Devices”

2. Tape on “… ” > “Share”, You can select a single channel to share or select the entire NVR system to share

3.Share the device by typing in the user name you want to share and selecting the function as needed.

• The other user needs to register a Guard Viewer APP account and provide the user name for sharing.

• After that, when this user login the APP will find the device by navigating to “Devices”.

4.Share the device by generating a QR code

• Create a sharing password and set the valid period

• Click “Generate”, your APP will generate a QR code

• Other users can use the APP to add the device by scanning the QR code you sent

Network Setup for NVR/DVR/IP Camera before adding to Guarding Vision

The Following network settings must be checked before adding the device to Guarding vision App.

Method 1: From NVR Local menu

Step 1: Right Click on the NVR Monitor and select “Menu”.

Step 2: Select “Configuration” from the Menu options.

Step 3: Select “Network” and check the option “Enable DHCP” Click “Apply”

Step 4: Make sure your NVR/DVR obtained an “IPV4 Address” and “Preferred DNS Server” values automatically. If not, check your network settings and make sure your device is properly connected to your network router or switch.

Step 5: Select “Platform Access” and check “Enable”.  You will be taken to the service terms window.

Step 6: Create a “Verification Code” check the “Guarding Vision service terms” click “OK”.

Step 7: Click “Apply” to apply the settings. The status will change to “Online”. The QR Code being displayed on your device “Platform Access” page can be scanned with Guarding Vision app to add the device into your App. To proceed with adding the device into the app scroll down to “Adding NVR/DVR to Guarding Vision App”.

Method 2: From the NVR/DVR/IP Camera Web page.

Step 1: Input the IP address of the NVR into the address bar and login with the credentials.

Step 2: In the registration page, input the mandatory credentials and select “Email” for registering with email or “Country Code” for registering by a phone number.

Step 3: Once the account is created, select “Device Management” and select “Add” to add a new device.

Step 4: In the “Add Device” pop-up window, input the device serial number (Last 9 digits of the serial number found on the device sticker) and click on “Search”.

Platform Access for Guarding Vision Offilne Issue

Guarding Vision Offline Issue

Purpose:

This document provides steps to fix the Platform Access “Offline” status issue on your NVR/DVR.

Solution:

The most common cause for “Offline” status is when the “Preferred DNS Server” space is empty. Follow the steps below to fix this issue.

NVR Local menu

Step 1: On the monitor connected to the NVR, Right click and go to Menu  Configuration  Network  General

Step 2: Enter the “Preferred DNS server” address as 8.8.8.8

(Note: If “Enable DHCP” is checked, you can check the option “Enable DNS DHCP” which will let the NVR/DVR pullup its own Preferred DNS Server)

Step 3: Click “Apply”. The device might take a few seconds before applying the new values.

Step 4: Now go to Menu  Configuration  Network  Platform Access. The status should show “Online”. The device might take up to 60 sec before showing the new status. Click “Back” wait 60 sec and check the status again.

(Note: You can scan the QR code on your “Platform Access” page to add the device directly to your Guarding Vision App.)

Step 1: On the DVR/NVR screen, right click Select Menu  Configuration  Network.

How To Install The Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

Amcrest Orion is a video surveillance software application that provides an all-in-one, full-featured solution to manage and monitor Amcrest network cameras, NVRs, and DVRs, etc. The software supports up to 64 devices for free with a maximum of 256 channels. It is currently a Windows based only software, however, to download the latest version of this software click here.

For more information on how to install the software, please refer to the information provided below.

Step 1: Download the Amcrest Orion software and open the .exe file.  Select the software license agreement and click Next.

Step 2: Select an Installation Path if needed using the Browse option. Click Install.

Note: Allow the components to install on your computer.

Step 3: Click Run.

Step 4: Select a network mode and the network card and click Next Step.

Step 5: Set the TLS self adaptive mode if necessary. Please note, this is disabled by default but can be enabled if needed. Click Finish.

Note: TLS self adaptive mode is a security feature that allows Amcrest devices to automatically switch between Transport Layer Security (TLS) versions 1.2 and 1.3 depending on the capabilities of the connected device. This ensures that the highest level of security is always used, while also avoiding compatibility issues with older devices.

Step 6: Download the Client software to your computer.

Note: Click proceed anyway in the browser if needed to download the client software.

Step 7: Click Download and follow the steps to install the client software to your computer and run the client software.

Step 8: Enter the IP address found on the server client into the Server Address field. The default username will be system. Enter a password for the client account into the interface, click Next Step.

Note: Set security questions, this information will be used to access your client software if you forgot the password. Click OK. This will load the client software.

How To Add An Amcrest Camera To Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

Before connecting your device to the Amcrest Orion software, please make sure the device is initialized and on the same network as the computer. You will need the username and password for the device before you are able to add it to the camera. For more information, please refer to the information provided below.

Step 1: Access the client software and select the configuration icon. Select Device.

Step 2: All connected devices should be displayed in the Discover Device menu, however, click the Refresh button to refresh the interface if needed.  Select the device and click Add to Device List.

Step 3: Enter the password for the device and click OK.

The device will be added successfully.

Step 4: To view the device, access the main menu and click on Monitoring Center. Double click the device from the device list to view the live feed.

How to Use the Dewarping Features on a Fisheye Camera Using Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

Fisheye dewarping (Fisheye unwrapping) provides a correction in the distortion of images obtained from a camera equipped with a fisheye lens. This allows the user to view different aspects and views of the 360° image provided by the fisheye lens of the camera. For more information on how to use the fisheye dewarping functions in the Amcrest Surveillance Pro software, please refer to the information provided below.

Step 1: Log into the Amcrest Orion Software and select Monitoring Center.

Step 2: Select your fisheye camera from the device list to view the live feed. Right-click on the live feed to access the live view options menu. Hover your mouse pointer over Installation Mode and select an installation mode.

Installation Modes Explained

	Wall Mount: This allows you to access preset fisheye features based on a wall or sideways mount installation.
	Ceiling Mount: This allows you to access preset fisheye features based on a ceiling or straight mount installation.
	Ground Mount: This allows you to access preset fisheye features based on a ground position mount installation.

Note: Different installation modes will provide different dewarping functions. For more information on the dewarping functions provided with each installation mode, please refer to Dewarping Features Explained.

Step 3: Hover your mouse over Fisheye View and select a dewarping option from the provided list of icons.

	Provides two inverted live view images on both the top and bottom feed. Use the mouse to adjust and move the feed in a left or right simultaneously.
	Provides a 360°panorama view based on two independent left and right sub images. The sub images support zoom and 360° left and right pan. Hover the mouse over the bottom center to display a panoramic viewing option.

How To Download Recordings Using Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

Downloading a Recording

Step 1: Open the Amcrest Orion surveillance software and select Download Center.

Step 2: Select the device in the Resources menu and click the calendar option in the Time menu. Select a date and time range of the recordings. Click OK.

Step 3: Click Search. Recordings can be accessed in a timeline or file format. If downloading from a timeline range, select a start and end time in the timeline, enter the software user password and click OK. Verify the start and end time of the recording and click OK. The recording will begin to download.

Step 4: Click the Downloaded tab to view and locate the storage path of the recording. Click the  icon to locate the downloaded recording on your computer.

Note: If downloading multiple recordings, it is recommended to use the File menu. Select all recordings you want to download and select Download Selected File. To download a single file, click the Operation icon.

How to Customize Video Settings Using Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

How To Setup Recording Schedules In The Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

The Amcrest Orion Surveillance software allows you the opportunity to set your added device to record on motion or on the continuous (general) recording schedules. Ensure the option is enabled and click the Recording Time dropdown menu. The schedule will be set to record 24/7, all days of the week, however, can be set to recording during the week or only on the weekends. However, a custom Time Template can be used if needed.

Enter a name for the custom time template and click the period settings (  )option. A total of 6 periods can be set if needed by clicking the “+” icon. Enter a start and end time for the schedule. For instance, in this example we will set it to only recording from 6am (0600) – 4pm (1600). Select which days the schedule will apply and click OK.

The schedule will now be set in the software. Click OK.

Select the newly created recording schedule template from the Recording Time menu. In the Recording Channel, select the devices you would like the schedules to apply. Click OK.

The storage plan will be will now be applied to the selected devices.

The same concept can be applied to motion detection recording plans as well if needed.

How To Set an Email Server In Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

Email Setup will be dependent on your specific email provider. In this example, we will be using Gmail. A email server can be used to send email notifications or during password recovery. For more information on how to setup an email server, please refer to the information provided below.

Step 1: Open the Amcrest Orion Surveillance software, select the  option, and select System Parameters.

Step 2: Select Email Server and enable the option.

Step 3: Select the email provider from the SMTP Server Type dropdown menu and enter all requested information into the interface. Please note, the password should be your Gmail generated app password. **Please refer to Allow Less Secure Apps (Updated) section for more details.

Allowing Less Secure Apps (Updated)

As of May 30th, 2022, Google will be removing the allow less secure apps option, this means a generated password will need to be entered that will allow email alerts to come through on your account. Before proceeding, please ensure 2 factor authentication is enabled in your account settings. For more information on how to do this, please refer to the information provided below.

1.) In Gmail, click the account avatar/icon picture located in the upper right of the window.
2.) Now click the blue button that says “Manage Your Google Account”

Once on the account setting page please click “Security”

3) Click onApp passwords

4) Enter your email password, and click Next.
5) Select an option from the provided drop down menus and select Custom. Enter a name for the authentication and click Generate.

6) Google will provide a security password which must be entered into the device’s Email Setup interface in the device’s web UI.

Step 4: Click Test Email. Once confirmed, click Save.

How To Setup Views and Tours Using Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

How To Create a View

When creating a tour it is highly recommended to create a view first before creating the tour. A view is a collection of cameras/channels shown in a window. This can be a collection of devices from the same DVR/NVR or a collection from different devices in a single view. For efficiency purposes, it is recommended to keep cameras from the same NVR in the same view. Conversely, this is not mandatory and each view can be customized based on your needs.

Step 1: Log into the Amcrest Orion Software and select Monitoring Center.

Note: Views can be customized to a range of a single camera to 64 cameras simultaneously. Please keep in mind the more cameras that are opened the more network resources are being used. Our recommendation is to set a max of 9 camera views or less but in our example, we will use a wide variety to show the flexibility of the feature.

Step 2: Select each device from the device list and click the save icon (  ). Enter a name for the View and click OK.

Note: If you are using a DVR/NVR with multiple channels, it is necessary to expand the device to show the individual channels associated with your device.

If you are performing this procedure on multiple computers, the process will need to be performed on each desktop/laptop. For this reason, we recommend renaming the cameras in a way to know which cameras/channels go together.

Step 3: Select View. Select the dropdown option next to the View folder. Select the newly created view to load the live feed of the cameras in the interface.

Tour Setup

When you have finished creating the view you can now start configuring a tour. A tour will allow the software to shift between multiple PTZ presets set by the user in the software. If using a PTZ camera, please navigate to Add Device menu and select the edit icon (  ) for the device. Select Video Channel  and ensure the Camera Type is set to PTZ Camera. Click OK.

Note: At least 2 presets must be set to configure a tour.

Step 1: Access the Monitoring Center, select the device, access the PTZ menu, and select the down arrow.

Step 2: Use the PTZ option to rotate the camera to a specific point. Click the Edit (  ) icon and name the tour. Click the checkmark (  ) when finished.

Note: Click the Go icon (  ) to call a preset. The camera will rotate to a related position.

Step 3: Once the presets are created, click the  icon and select the Edit (  )icon.

Step 4: Enter a name for the tour and click the add (  ) icon. Select all applicable presets related to the tour and click OK.

Note: Click the play (  ) icon to run the tour.

Step 5: Navigate to the Resources menu, right click on the device to set a tour duration.

Note: To stop the tour, click on the stop (  ) icon in the Tour (  )menu.

How to Recover a Forgotten Admin Password on Amcrest Orion Surveillance Software

If you have forgotten the admin password to log into the Amcrest Orion Surveillance software, the password can be recovered using the Forgotten Password option. This option can be found on the login screen once the software has been opened. For more information on how to retrieve your forgotten password, please refer to the information provided below.

Step 1: Open the Amcrest Orion Surveillance software and click Forgotten Password.

Step 2: Verify the account’s username and click Next Step.

Step 3: The password can be reset using security questions or through email verification. Please note, the password cannot be reset if there is no email server established. Once the security questions or answered, click Next Step.

Step 4: Enter the new password into the provided fields, click Next Step.

Step 5: Click Log In Now.

Note: Enter the new password and click Log In to open the software. Select Remember Password or Auto Login to allow the software to open on your machine without having to reenter it.

How To View Events Using The Playback Feature In Amcrest Orion

The monitoring center allows the user to view both the live view and playback of a connected device. The monitoring center can be found on the Home menu of the software. The playback option allows the user to view motion, human, or vehicle detection events retained on the device.

Step 1: Click on the Playback option and select your device. Double click to load the initial recording in the timeline.

Note: Use the timeline to manually scroll through the events of the day. The calendar option can be used to choose different dates and times of the events.

To view filter and view specific record types, such as human/vehicle events, click the filter icon (  )

Connect the two RJ45 cables from the Vi00103RX combiner, labelled “Port 1” and “Port 2”, to two available POE ports on your POE switch or NVR.​

NOTE – The cameras do not need to be activated with a password. If you are connecting them directly to an NVR, then the Plug & Play feature will still work and activate the cameras; If you are connecting them to a separate POE switch, you will be able to access them and activate them on your network later. Plug & Play setups will also work when cameras have already been activated, as long that these are set with the same password as the NVR and have DHCP enabled. ​

Connect your single Cat5/6 cable to the port on the Vi00103RX combiner, which is labelled as “Port 1 + Port 2”.​

Now, plug in the other end of the long single cable to the Vi00103TX splitter’s “Port 1 + Port 2” RJ45 port.​

NOTE – this cable cannot be longer than 100m / 320 feet​

Connect your IEEE802.3af/at IP cameras or POE devices to each of the ports, labelled “Port 1” and “Port 2”, using another Cat5/6 cable for each.​

NOTE – the length of these cables, and the long single cable between the Vi00103RX and Vi00103TX cannot exceed 100m / 320 feet in total, as this is the maximum standard range of POE. ​

Green lights should appear on the Vi00103TX to confirm that each of the ports is delivering POE to your devices. If they do not, check the power supply to your POE source and all of your Cat5/6 cables are secure.​

If you are connecting the cameras directly to an NVR as “Plug & Play”, then they will connect and appear automatically after a minute or two. Alternatively, if you are connecting them to a separate POE switch, then they should be discoverable on the network and allow you to adjust any network settings so you can add them to your CCTV system.​

Can I connect more than one camera via a POE switch to a single POE port on my Hikvision NVR?

In some scenarios, it can be useful to have several cameras connected to a POE switch but to keep that switch directly connected to your NVR rather than the local network.

If you are able to connect each camera to its own POE port on your NVR, then this is generally advisable, as using a Plug & Play setup is much simpler and avoids the need for extra hardware or power supplies.

However, if your NVR is closer to your POE switch than it is an available access point to your LAN, then it can make connecting the cameras simpler whilst avoiding the need to have an ethernet cable running from each camera back to the NVR.

One other benefit of keeping the cameras connected directly to your NVR this way, rather than connecting them across your LAN, is that the connection does not rely on your router being operational. Provided the NVR and POE switch are working, the cameras will remain connected and recording regardless of any problems that might occur with your local network.

How do I use a Hikvision NVR’s “Virtual Host” feature?

One of the most successful selling points of a Hikvision NVR to many small-setup customers is the “Plug and Play” functionality that simplifies the setup process of their surveillance system. However, plugging a camera directly into a port on the NVR, unfortunately, does not allow you to access the camera via its own internal LAN IP using a browser due to it being on the NVRs internal network, and this can significantly reduce the number of configuration options you have access to.

The NVR does allow you to configure many options for each connected camera, but some essential features are only accessible via connecting to the camera itself (such as audio codec options). This was of course a big problem previously.

With the advent of newer firmware and models of NVR, Hikvision has introduced a feature called Virtual Host. Activating this feature turns your NVR into a “host” for the cameras allowing you to connect to them via a browser. Essentially, the NVR forwards all traffic received from your browser to the appropriate camera you’re trying to connect to, eliminating the biggest problem of plug and play functionality.

Step 1:​

First of all, access your NVR via a web browser. If you do not know the LAN IP of your NVR, download Hikvision’s tool SADP tool, which scans your network for any Hikvision devices that are connected and allow you to see and change their network settings, including the IP address.​
