About Arlo Routines, Modes, Rules, and Automations

This article is for the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm Away, Arm Home, and Standby. If you have the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm or Disarm, please visit: About Arlo Modes and Rules

Modes and Rules let you tell your Arlo system what to do in different situations. Each Mode uses one or more Rules to control your Arlo system.

For example, you can set your Arlo system to record a 30-second video when the motion sensor is activated on a specific camera and alert you with push notifications.

Arlo Modes

Arlo Modes give you control over how your cameras respond to motion or sound. Modes tell your Arlo cameras to respond differently at various times. For example, you probably don't want to receive an alert about motion when you are at home trying to relax. You might also want to turn on a different Mode when you are away on vacation to better protect your home.

Arlo has three Modes:

Arm Away

Detection that is on when you are not at home.
This represents the highest level of security.
You will want to have all cameras and devices active with most motion triggers, as this Mode is for when you are not at home.
When a camera is added to your Arlo account, a Rule will be added to the Arm Away Mode.

Arm Home

Detection is on when you are at home and has reduced monitoring.
This represents an intermediate level of security.
Your devices will be active depending on the triggers set when you are at home.

Standby

 Lowest level of detection.
At any time, you can adjust the triggers based detection level of your choice.

Each Mode is fully customizable based on the level of detection you want. You might want to set one Mode in which some motion sensors and cameras are active, but others are not. For example, when you are sleeping, your exterior cameras can be activated based on the selected Mode, but your interior cameras will be inactive.

Arlo Rules

For each Mode, you can set the Rules for your devices. First, select an available device for the Rule. You can also use devices to trigger other devices; for example, you can set motion on a Video Doorbell, to trigger a different camera to record an alternate view.

When

The trigger can be Motion Detection, Audio Detection, or both depending on the device.
Other devices such as Arlo All-in-One Sensors have different options.
If you subscribe to Arlo Secure you can also select Person, Package, Animal, Vehicle, or Other Motion for Advanced Motion Detection. For more information, visit: What are Arlo's advanced motion alerts, and how do I set them up?

Then

Under Then, select Record Video, Take Snapshot, Activate Siren, or Send Notification. Options vary by device.
You can also Add an Action to further customize your Rule or cross-trigger other Arlo devices to perform actions.
Each device that responds to motion or sound can record video, take a snapshot, or do nothing.
You can set the video to record until the activity stops, or you can set a manual length of the video recording from a minimum of ten seconds to a maximum of 120 seconds.
If your camera includes an integrated siren or if you use an Arlo SmartHub or Base Station, you can turn on a siren in response to a trigger.

Notifications

When a trigger is detected, Arlo can send you push notifications, email alerts, or both.
You can also send email alerts to friends, family members, pet sitters, or anyone who might need to respond when a camera is triggered.
For more information on setting up text notifications, visit: How can I receive text notifications from my Arlo system instead of email notifications?

To edit Rules:

1.Launch the Arlo Secure App.
2.Tap Routines.
3.Tap
4.Tap Arm AwayArm Home, or Standby.
5.Tap the Arlo device you want to edit.
6.Edit the Rules and tap Save.
7.Tap Finish.

Note: Changes to settings on the Arlo All-in-One Sensor can take up to five minutes to take effect. To force immediate changes, press the button on the bottom of the All-in-One Sensor.

Arlo Automations

Automate your devices to do what you want when you want. For example, when you leave in the morning, set your Arlo system to automatically change from Arm Home or Standby to Arm Away Mode for device activation and increased security.

In Arlo Automations, you can:

Add Schedule

Create a custom schedule to manage your Arlo system.
For example, create one Schedule Automation for 9AM to set your system to Arm Away, while you are at work, and create another Schedule Automation for 6PM to set the system to Arm Home or Standby when you return.
You can also have Scheduled Automations match up with your local Sunrise or Sunset time.

Add Arrive/Leave

Create an arrive or leave automation to manage your Arlo system.
For example, when someone arrives at your location automatically set the Mode to Standby.

How do I add a Schedule Automation to my Arlo system?

This article is for the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm Away, Arm Home, and Standby. If you have the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm and Disarm, visit: How can I set a schedule for my camera in my Arlo account?

You can create one or more Schedule Automations to take different actions for your Arlo system based on the time of day, and day of the week. The Schedule Automations allow your system to take actions such as Change Mode, Record a Video, or Adjust Device Settings.

Configuration

A Schedule Automation allows you to take one or more Actions at one specific time of the day, on one or more days of the week.
Schedule Automations recur on a weekly basis. You can also set the time to the sunrise or sunset time for your location.
You can set a Schedule Automation to only take action when your system is set to a specific Mode.
You may create multiple Schedule Automations to trigger different actions at separate times.

In configurations where you would like to have actions occur at different times of day, you will need to set up separate Schedule Automations, one for each time of day an action should occur.

For example, if you want an automation to set the mode for your system to Arm Away at 9:00am Monday through Friday, and then set the mode to Arm Home starting at 4:00pm Monday through Friday, you will need to set up two separate Schedule Automations.

Create one Schedule Automation for Change Mode to Arm Away at 9:00am.
Create a second Schedule Automation for Change Mode to Arm Home at 4:00pm.

To create a Schedule Automation:

1.Launch the Arlo Secure App or log in to your Arlo account at my.arlo.com
2.Tap or click Routines.
3.Tap or click in the upper-right corner of the screen.
4.Tap or click Add Schedule.
5.Select which days of the week you would like the Schedule Automation to occur.
6.Set the time for the Schedule Automation to occur.
Alternately, you can set the time to match the sunrise or sunset for your location.

For information on configuring the Sunrise/Sunset feature on Schedule Automations, visit:
How does the Sunrise/Sunset feature work for my Scheduled Automation on my Arlo System?
7.Tap or click Add Action. Select the action you would like to occur at the selected time and configure the Action.
8.Tap or click Next or Save on the Action configuration screen.
9.Choose the device that you would like to use for the Action and tap or click Next.
10.Enter a name for the Schedule Automation.
We recommend using a name that reflects the function of the automation. For example, if the automation is to set Arm Away in the morning during weekdays, name the automation “Arm Away Weekday Mornings”.
11.If you would like to have the Schedule Automation only occur when your system is in a specific mode, tap or click Always Enabled to change which modes are enabled. All three modes are enabled by default.
12.If you would like to more than one Action take place at the specified time, tap or click Add Action.
13.Tap or click Save. Your new schedule automation is saved.

How do I add, edit, or remove rules in my Arm Away, Arm Home, and Standby Modes for my Arlo system?

This article is for the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm Away, Arm Home, and Standby. If you have the Arlo Secure App experience with Arm and Disarm, please visit: About Arlo Modes and Rules

Arlo modes give you control over how your cameras respond to motion, sound, or other changes detected in your home. Modes let you configure your Arlo devices to respond differently depending on your needs. By editing, adding, or removing rules on each mode, you allow your camera to take action as preferred. For example, if you are away from home and don't expect visitors, you would want motion in your living room to trigger your camera to record and notify you. However, you would not want to receive notifications for motion when you are at home watching TV.

The Arlo Secure App has three modes:

  Arm Away
  Arm Home
  Standby

All three modes can be fully customized by adding, editing, or removing rules based on the level of detection you prefer.

When adding a camera to your Arlo system, a new rule to record video upon motion detection is created automatically under the Arm Away mode.

Note: Cloud video recording requires an Arlo Secure subscription. You can also set your camera to record to local storage when connected to compatible Arlo SmartHub or Base Station. In the case that you do not have a subscription or local storage, the new rule created will send push notifications when motion is detected.

6.Choose an available device for the rule.
7.Tap or click on Save. The rule for the device will now appear in the rules list for the selected mode.
8.Tap on the rule to change the rule settings for the device.

For cameras and video doorbells, the newly created rule will have the following defaults:

 Then:
 Record Video**: On
 Send Notification:
· Push Notification: On
· Email: Off
 Activate Siren*: Off

* – Audio Detection and Siren features are available on select models.
** – Record video option enabled when subscribed to an
Arlo Secure subscription or local storage is configured for the device.
